Each map comes with the following three files:

.PNG Image file

Each image file is in .PNG format. .PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is an accessible image format that can be used in a wide variety of image viewing and editing programs.

.MAP Calibration File

Each image comes with an associated .MAP calibration file. This text file tells various Map Software packages the details about each image file. Information included in the .MAP file includes information regarding geo-referencing, scales, datums, corner points etc. Programs that read .MAP calibration files include: OziExplorer, Global Mapper and MacGPS Pro.

.JPR Calibration File

Each image comes with an associated .JPR calibration file. This text file tells various Map Software packages the details about each image file. Information included in the .JPR file includes information regarding geo-referencing, scales, datums, corner points etc. Programs that read .JPR calibration files include: Memory Map, Fugawi, Mapcruiser with Navsim and MacGPS Pro.

OziExplorer is a moving map trip planning software that allows you to upload and download tracks, routes and waypoints from your GPS to your computer or laptop. Etopo Digital Maps are simple to import into OziExplorer and work great.

Importing maps

After loading OziExplorer for the first time you need to tell OziExplorer where the maps you would like to use are located:

  • Use the File Menu drop down and choose the Configuration option
  • Choose the System tab
  • Change both the Map File Path and Data File Path to be where the maps are located on your computer (Either the DVD or the location your copied the maps to)
  • Choose the Map Images tab
  • Change the Path 1 location to match the Map File Path and Data File path location you choose earlier
  • Click on Save to finish making configuration changes

You are now able to load your maps by clicking on File \ Load from file \ Load map file and choosing the map you wish to load.

Using an Index Map

OziExplorer has the ability to load an index map to show an outline of all the maps stored in the Search Path. These will be then be drawn onto the loaded map. By moving the mouse over the window the maps available are displayed as a hint and the cursor changes to a finger pointer. By clicking the mouse all the maps available will be displayed in the map search list where the required map can be selected. To load an index map simply choose the Map drop down menu and select Index Map. You then need to choose the image to use as an Index Map. Included on each DVD is a directory of Index Maps so browse to where the maps are located on your computer and choose the map you wish to use. The Index maps included are the following:

  • CTI01 - NTS Index of the Atlantic Provinces
  • CTI02 - NTS Index of Quebec
  • CTI03 - NTS Index of Ontario
  • CTI04 - NTS Index of the Prairie Provinces
  • CTI05 - NTS Index of British Columbia

Elevation Data

OziExplorer can load Elevation data that shows up where the cursor is pointed on the map. This elevation data also works with OziExplorer 3D to create 3D maps. This elevation data is available to be downloaded from the Canadian Government here: Geobase.ca For more details about how to use the elevation data please see the OziExplorer Height Data List.
